In the Maine Highlands you will have the opportunity to find the most plentiful moose and deer in Maine.  The state has a record number of deer, over 300,000, and moose numbering around 35,000 you will certainly be able to get your limit. Not only is the hunting great for the deer and moose but don’t forget about bear.  The bear population of 23,000 will keep you busy.

No other state in the lower 48 has an equal amount of bear.  If you are a bear hunter this is certainly a state you want to visit. You may end up with a trophy from the beautiful Pine tree State.  The Highlands area offers you the opportunity that you are seeking so don’t hesitate to visit.

If you are looking for upland birds or waterfowl there are uncountable acres of prime woodcock and grouse habitat just waiting for you to try your skill.  The coastlines are perfect for hunting the sea duck and other waterfowl.

If you are a bow hunter you will enjoy the outing in the beautiful woodlands area of Maine.  October is the best opportunity for Bow Hunters to achieve their goal of getting a trophy Whitetail.  There are millions of acres of land and roads open for general hunting for you to put up your own tree stand or maybe you prefer to hunt from natural blinds.  You can hunt other times too but in October the deer haven’t felt the pressure of the hunting season so they are easier to come across.

For Bear hunting you can plan on a 4 week season generally the last week of August into September.  Maine bear hunters use bow, rifle, slug gun, mussel loaders, hand guns or cameras to capture their bear trophies.  You should always remember that this isn’t like hunting a deer.  Bears are predators who will be hunting you and when they are hit they don’t lie down and bleed out like a deer, they will hide so you will hot find him until you can smell it.  He may run until he dies which could take you 10 to 20 miles into the forest lands before you find him.  Patience and care should be given to a precision killing shot.

The last week of September and the second week in October are the prime time for Trophy Moose hunting.  Maine has a lottery system for moose hunting permit so if you are going get your name in.

You can also go buffalo hunting in Maine although it is inside a fenced range.  Regardless, those that have participated in these hunts claim it surpasses any other animal they have hunted.  They talk about the thrill involved in taking down one of these powerful beasts.

If you want to fish instead of hunt the opportunities for this are too endless.  Maine Native Brook Trout, Landlocked Salmon, Pickerel fishing and more are waiting for you to test your skill.  You can be on a stream trout fishing without anyone else within miles of you.  Maybe you want to do some ice fishing.  That is also available, bring your snowshoes and equipment and enjoy nature.

All of these opportunities are waiting for you in the Highlands of Maine.
