Visiting the Maine Maritime Museum and the Town of Bath

When someone thinks of Maine, he or she often thinks of the maritime traditions associated with the state. Shipbuilding, trading, sailing tall ships in rough weather and lobster fishing are all things you can learn about with a visit to the Maine Maritime Museum, which is located in Bath, Maine.

The museum is spread out over more than twenty-five acres of seafront, galleries, and exhibits, many of which are hands on and fun for both children and adults. You can even see a historic shipyard that has five of the original buildings from the 1800s; this helps you to get a real sense of the history of the place. There is a life size sculpture of the largest wooden sailing ship ever built, the Wyoming, which is quite impressive.

You can listen to tales of old travels to far away places and all the dangers that the sea poses. Learn also, how families from the era lived. It was not an easy life. During certain parts of the year, you can tour a real Victorian era home and take cruises on the water. There is even a pirate ship. The campus on which the museum is located is quite beautiful, and is quite close to the town of Bath.

After you have finished your tour of the Maine Maritime Museum, you’ll be pleased to know that there is still plenty to do in and around the town of Bath. If you are looking for some outdoor activities, you can visit the beach at either Reid State Park or Popham Beach State Park. Both beaches are sandy and inviting. You may also wish to check out the Josephine Newman Wildlife Sanctuary, the Monstweag Preserve, or the Bates-Morse Conservation Area. There are even more sanctuaries in the area that you might want to visit as well.

The city of Bath is both historic and elegant. You can take a tour of the historic district, do some shopping and check out the antiques, or sign into one of the many beds and breakfasts in the area. There are plenty of great dining areas, too.

The Maine Maritime Museum and the town of Bath hold a lot of interesting history and culture. It is a wonderful and peaceful getaway. You are sure to remember your trip through Maine and your stay in Bath for a lifetime.
