Ogunquit Heritage Museum – Ogunquit, Maine

Explore New England History at the Ogunquit Heritage Museum in Maine. The Ogunquit Heritage Museum is an excellent place to explore the history, culture and early architecture of Ogunquit, Maine and its surrounding areas. The Museum opened in 2001 following the donation of the 1780 Captain James Winn House. The Ogunquit Heritage Museum at the Captain Winn House is located at 86 Obeds Lane in the Dorothea Jacobs Grant Common, Ogunquit, Maine.

The Captain Winn House is a wonderful example of 18th Century Cape architecture. It contains almost all of its original architectural. Some of the highlights of the Captain Winn House include "Indian" shutters in a back bedroom, a buttery with a back staircase, and a unique Federal staircase in the front foyer that leads to two small bedrooms in the garret. Nearly all of the Captain Winn House’s original flooring, paneling and hardware is in tact.

There are four rooms of exhibits to explore at the Ogunquit Heritage Museum, and exhibits include both artwork and historical artifacts.
The art colony, schools and artists are the focus of one entire room at the Ogunquit Heritage Museum, and paintings are exhibited here. A second room focuses on Maritime history, including the history of fishing and coastal trade in Ogunquit.

A third room at the Ogunquit Heritage Museum is devoted to the history of the town, and lastly, there is a room that provides information on the architecture of Ogunquit, including the Captain Winn House. One new exhibit focusing on an each aspect of these four focuses is featured at the Museum every year.

The Ogunquit Heritage Museum now contains the Littlefield Genealogical Library. Charles Littlefield Seaman was an expert genealogist and historian of Ogunquit. In accordance with his wishes, his research and collection of papers was donated to the Ogunquit Heritage Museum in 2003. The Littlefield Genealogical Library consists of documents the Museum already held combined with Charles’ collection, and it currently contains around 500 volumes of resources on Ogunquit, the state of Maine, and the other New England States. 

In addition to touring the exhibits at the Ogunquit Heritage Museum, visitors can plan to attend one of the cultural activities and special programs held here throughout the year.
